Sun Prairie Producers Win Midwest Video Awards

Sun Prairie Media Center is proud to announce that four programs have been honored with awards from Wisconsin Community Media at the 2015 Best of the Midwest Video Fest.  The conference and video fest banquet took place on April 30 through May 1 and is attended by media centers from all over the Midwest.  The purpose of this festival is to recognize outstanding video productions produced by public, educational and government access facilities and their producers.

Award of Excellence; Best in Show -  Senior; Produced by: Amateur; Category: Magazine/News Format  "Traffic Safety" Producer: Pat Campbell

"Traffic Safety" was produced by Pat Campbell, host of the monthly program "Colonial Club Commentator."  "Traffic Safety" was a special program to address traffic concerns in the City of Sun Prairie.

Jamison and Mike produce a weekly movie review program.  Viewers can catch up on the latest releases in theaters, as well as, classic "throwback" films.

Award of Excellence; Produced by: Amateur; Category: Talk Show "Sun Prairie Sports View" Producer: Karl Raymond and Jake Kurtz

Karl Raymond, Sports Editor for The Star, and Jake Kurtz produce the biweekly sports show "Sun Prairie Sports View".  They feature the latest in sports from the local Sun Prairie high school teams to the Badgers, Brewers and Packers.  Congratulations to Karl and Jake on their Award of Excellence.

Significant Community Program "Doing Happiness in Sun Prairie" Producer: Matt Glowacki

Matt Glowacki, producer of "Doing Happiness in Sun Prairie"  focuses this program on good things people are doing for others in the community.  This program featured the Maureen Mengelt Memorial Day run with Kevin Mengelt and also Josh Deppe from Prairie Athletic Club. 



Sun Prairie Public Library & Media Center Volunteer Appreciation 2015

SPMC and the Public Library held the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon Wednesday, April 15th.  We'd like to thank all our volunteers for all the work and time they put into Media Center.

Chris Mertes, Managing Editor of The Star was awarded SPMC's Outstanding Dedication & Service.  Chris has been a dedicated volunteer since 2004, producing well over 100 original programs.  He has produced "Talk of the Town" since 2004 and this year began working with City Administrator Aaron Oppenheimer to produce the award winning program "Inside Your City with Aaron and Chris".  Both programs seek to give insight on local issues and city operations.

City Administrator Aaron Oppenheimer was honored by both the Sun Prairie Public Library and the Media Center with the Mildred Thompson Award.  The Mildred Thompson Award recognizes those who have volunteered with both the library and the media center.  In 2014, Aaron Oppenheimer begin producing "Inside Your City with Aaron and Chris", a program that focuses on the latest news, events and updates from council.  "Inside You City" has also recently received an award from the Best in the Midwest video festival as "Best in Show".  Thank you to Aaron for his dedication to producing this program and the Sun Prairie Media Center.

Sun Prairie Public Library & Media Center Volunteer Appreciation 2014

SPMC and the Public Library held the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon Wednesday, May 7th. Don Hooser was awarded SPMC's Outstanding Dedication & Service. Kim Koss received the Mildred Thompson award from the Media Center & Library. We'd like to thank all our volunteers for all the work and time they put into Media Center.

Kim Koss was honored by both the Sun Prairie Public Library and the Media Center with the Mildred Thompson Award.  Kim plays a key role in the "Book n' It" run each year.  She especially developed a marketing strategy for the annual run and used SPMC equipment and facilities in producing a PSA for the event each year.

Don Hooser started producing and hosting "City Talk" in 2002.  "City Talk" is a public affairs program that features interviews with government official, city department heads and leaders in Sun Prairie.  To date, he has produced over 100 hours of original content with "City Talk" programs.

In 2006, Don Hooser teamed up with Chris Mertes to produce and co-host the show "Talk ot the Town", another public affairs program.  Over the years they have interviews mayors, school officials and candidates vying for local political positions.  To date he has produced over 140 hours of original content with "Talk of the Town" programs.

Don has been involved in other programs broadcast on KSUN, such as: Candidate Debates, Middle School City Government Day and numerous city meetings.

Sun Prairie Media Center producers, Jan Moore & Mike Cunningham, received four different awards at this year's Wisconsin Community Media Annual Video Festival. The conference and video festival awards banquet took place on April 26th & 27th, and are attended by access TV stations from all over the Midwest. The purpose of this festival is to recognize outstanding video productions produced by public, educational and government access facilities and their producers. The following programs received top awards in their respective categories:

"Footprints of Sun Prairie Then & Now" Producer: Mike Cunningham

Mike Cunningham produced this video to help celebrate the City of Sun Prairie's 175th Anniversary. This short video incorporates historical & modern day pictures of the city along with narration. Mike worked with Peter Klein at the Sun Prairie Historical Library & Museum, and Anna Hahm to create an accurate, original video about the history of the City of Sun Prairie.

"Prairie Perspectives, President Obama in Madison" Producer: Jan Moore

Jan Moore recorded the events in Madison when President Obama visited the city in the fall of 2012. With a press pass, he was able to capture the President's speech from Bascom Hill on the UW Madison campus.

"Reel Talk Gun Control" Producer: Jan Moore

Jan Moore produced this short video by interviewing local community members about recent tragedies across the country and how they can be prevented. He attended the local Sweet Corn Festival last year to gather these interviews.

SPMC Volunteer Appreciation 2013

SPMC and the Public Library held the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon Wednesday, April 17th. Dr. Tim Culver was awarded SPMC's Outstanding Dedication & Service. Mike Kostelnik received the Mildred Thompson award from the Media Center & Library. We'd like to thank all our volunteers for all the work and time they put into Media Center.

Dr. Tim Culver began producing and hosting "School Views" in 1998. "School Views" is a program that highlights the public schools in Sun Prairie as Dr. Culver interviews students and asks them to share their experiences at their individual school. To date, he has produced just over 120 original "School Views" shows. In addition to "School Views" Dr. Culver has been a guest on many other programs including Talk of the Town, City Talk and Supe Talk. In total Dr. Culver has participated by either being a guest or producer in 485 different programs that have aired on KSUN.

Sun Prairie City Council member Mike Kostelnik was honor by both the Sun Prairie Public Library and the Media Center with the Mildred Thompson Award. Mike played a key role in providing the Media Center with our outdoor sign. The Kostelnik Family worked to design and donate the new outdoor sign you see today. Over the past three years Mike has participated in programs that air on KSUN; Common Council, Committee of the Whole, Talk of the Town and Candidate Debates and Forums. Mike has participated in almost 90 different programs that have aired on KSUN.


Louie Blaser Receives Lifetime Achievement Award


SPMC Commission Chairperson, Louie Blaser, received the Rotary Lifetime Achievement Award on Tuesday, July 31st, 2012. In honor of the award, the Rotary gifted SPMC with $500 for the purchase of an iPad. The iPad will be used as a teleprompter in SPMC's studios, for social media and add the to continuing improvement of the KIDS-4 media literacy program. Louie Blaser has been a member of the Rotary for 52 years and SPMC's Commission Chairperson since it's inception in 1977. Thank you to the Rotary and to Louie for all you have done for the community and the Media Center.
